SIZE
A bullmastiff is a large dog averaging between 24-27 inches and 90 – 130lbs in weight. The breed standard calls for large square heads with muscular bodies and necks. The females are more delicate than the males but are still substantial when compared to some other breeds even amongst the ‘working dog’ class. Their short coats make for easy grooming of only a few minutes a day, a little longer when they moult.
SPACE
A dog this size needs lots of space to roam free, so an apartment or small house may not be a suitable home for a Bullmastiff.
EXERCISE
Your new dog will need regular exercise but the walks do not need to be marathons. Frequent short walks with visits to new places to keep your dog’s interest would suit this breed well.
AT HOME
At home, you may find yourself ousted from your favourite seat or sofa by a comfort loving Bullmastiff. Some people have even resorted to buying their canine friend his own sofa but not everyone has the room or the money for this kind of expense.
TRANSPORT
Size is a consideration whenever you think of this dog. Transporting him to the vets, friends or the park may require several trips if you also have a large family and an average sized car, as he easily takes up the whole of the back seat on his own.
WORK AND DOG OWNERSHIP
When considering owning a Bullmastiff and working full time, it is sensible to be aware of the risks you are running. Your dog will become bored whilst left alone all day even as an adult but a young puppy or dog will be even worse. Not only are you likely to come home to puddles and messes but your bored dog may have decided that your cd collection, the sofa or the rug would be great fun to chew! Leaving a young dog and especially a puppy all day on its own is not to be advised if you want them to mature into that pleasant family companion you dream of.
TRAINING
Bullmastiffs make great companions, being loyal, reliable and calm. They can be very protective of the territory and their ‘pack’, your home and family. Training and early socialisation will help make a dog who is a good companion for you but who also lets the postman and the window cleaner visit without undue stress.
